Julie De Backer, MD, PhD, FESC is a genetic cardiologist with a clinical and research interest in Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) and Heritable Thoracic Aortic Diseases (HTAD) at Ghent University Hospital (Belgium). She is the director of the Expert center for congenital and genetic cardiovascular diseases and is involved in several interdisciplinary clinics for patients with ACHD/HTAD and in the development of adequate transition programs. Her research is translational and focuses on deep cardiovascular phenotyping in Marfan syndrome and related HTAD and the relation to the genotype. Combining human registry studies with research in genetically engineered animal models including mouse models and zebrafish, she and her team aim to better understand the pathophysiology and identify new targets for better and specifically more personalized treatment and management.
Julie De Backer has (co)-authored >120 A1 publications and 9 Book chapters. Her h-index is 49.
She is an active board member of several consortia and international societies, including Vascern, the ESC WG on Aorta and Peripheral Vascular Disease, GenTAC and the Montalcino Aortic Consortium. She was co-chair of the task-force for the development of new ESC ACHD guidelines (2020) and serves as associate editor for JACC and IJC Congenital Heart Disease.
