Dr. Terrence Yau trained at Johns Hopkins, McGill and the University of Toronto. He is the Chair of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Toronto, which comprises 5 affiliated hospitals with 30 faculty surgeons, 10 residents and 10-15 fellows, performing approximately 6000 pump cases per annum. The Division is internationally recognized for excellence in clinical outcomes and academic productivity in areas including valvular reconstruction, advanced heart failure, congenital heart disease, clinical trials and translational research, among others.
Dr. Yau is the Director of Cardiovascular Surgical Research at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Director of the Cardiac Stem Cell Therapy Program and Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. His clinical and research interests include heart failure, heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, cardiac stem cell transplantation, perioperative blood conservation and cardiac intensive care. Dr. Yau conducts a number of clinical research protocols including studies of perioperative myocardial protection and coagulation, stem cell transplantation for advanced heart failure, and novel technologies in cardiac surgery.
In addition, Dr. Yau has run a basic science laboratory working on novel therapies for end-stage heart failure not amenable to heart transplantation, including stem cell transplantation, gene therapy and transmyocardial revascularization. He has also led innovative multicentre randomized clinical trials in stem cell therapies for patients with heart failure.
