Hoon-Ki Sung M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Sung is a Senior Scientist in the Translational Medicine Program at The Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute. He is also cross-appointed to The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Sung's research program focuses on adipose (fat tissue) biology and the endocrine function of white adipose tissue. His team discovered that intermittent fasting, a diet regimen involving periodic fasting followed by normal eating, can reduce weight gain and improve glycemic control. This is achieved through the healthy remodelling of white adipose tissue, which is mediated by adipose-derived vascular growth factors. Additionally, Dr. Sung's research team studies the effects of diet interventions on adipose stem cells and their circadian rhythm.
During his lecture at Vascular 2023, Dr. Sung will discuss the impact of diet interventions on the metabolic function of adipose tissue. He will highlight the importance of these interventions for glycemic control and the prevention of fatty liver diseases.
