Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Dr. Ansar Hassan obtained his medical school degree from McGill University in 1998. Following this, he went to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where he completed his residency in cardiac surgery. In 2007, after having successfully defended his Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons examination, he travelled to Greenville, North Carolina to embark on a fellowship under the tutelage of Dr. Randolph Chitwood, the world’s leader in robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Dr. Hassan began his career Department of Cardiac Surgery at the New Brunswick Heart Center in 2009 and was instrumental in the development of the clinical outcomes research program as well as the minimally invasive cardiac surgery program. In 2021, he moved to Portland, Maine and joined the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Maine Medical Center where he is now the co-director of the cardiac surgery research program and surgical lead of the Maine Medical Center Mitral Center of Excellence. In addition, he is the current president of the Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons, was recently elected to the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, and is the surgical lead of the Northern New England Cardiovascular Disease Study Group.
