Dr. Brian Buchanan graduated from the University of Alberta with a BSc (hon) in Human Physiology in 2006 and MD in 2010. He went on to complete training in Internal Medicine (Dalhousie University, 2014) and Critical Care Medicine (McMaster University, 2016). Additionally, Brian has completed concurrent fellowship training in multi-organ critical care ultrasound (Western University 2015-2016). FInally, he completed a Master’s degree in Medical Education (University of Dundee University, 2021) with a focus on implementation and evaluation of a CCUS curriculum for critical care practitioners. He is currently employed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Alberta and a flight-transport physician at the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS).
Brian’s clinical and research interests include medical education, augmented reality, critical care ultrasound (CCUS), machine learning, and clinical integration of ultrasound. Brian has directed and instructed in numerous local, national, and international CCUS conferences/workshops, authored multiple chapters on critical care echocardiography, and directs a 1-year CCUS clinical fellowship and rotation. Brian is also director of the program entitled “Alberta Resuscitative Sonography” (www.AlbertaSono.ca) and currently sits as the Director for Critical Care Ultrasound in the Department of Critical Care Medicine.
