Western University
Dr. Neville Suskin is the Medical Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Program at St Joseph's Health Care, London and a Professor of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University. The central theme of his work is establishing pragmatic, evidence-based cardiac rehabilitation programming with integrated outcome assessment. Dr Suskin was an editor and author of the National CACPR Guidelines for Cardiac Rehabilitation and is one of three co-leads for the CACPR National Cardiac Rehabilitation Registry. He was a member of the writing group for the Ontario Standards for the Provision of Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and senior author of the Pan-Canadian Development of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Quality Indicators (QIs). In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-authored the guidance document for implementation of virtual care in Cardiac Rehabilitation. These guidelines, standards and QIs are foundational to the assessment and improvement of patient outcomes, as well as improvements in CR Programming. Through this work, Dr Suskin has demonstrated a 50% reduction in mortality and morbidity in the decade following CR completion and a 20-30% reduction in health care expenditures in the 2-3 years following CR participation. While these improvements in patient outcomes and health care costs are impressive, there are persistent 'residual risk' factors and care gaps that present future targets for further improvement in the management and outcomes of patients who are eligible for referral into Cardiac Rehabilitation.
