Dr. Stephen Fremes completed medical school at the University of Toronto in 1979 and then entered surgical residency in 1979, also at the University of Toronto. Dr. Fremes completed general surgery residency in 1986 and cardiovascular and thoracic surgery residency in 1988. Dr. Fremes was the recipient of a Heart and Stroke Research Fellowship from 1982 to 1984 during residency (MSc awarded 1984) and from 1988 to 1989 following residency, under the supervision of Dr. Richard Weisel and a Career Support award 1993-98. Dr. Fremes has been on staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and a faculty member of the University of Toronto since 1989. He was the Head of the Division of Cardiac Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre from 2000-2013 and is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He is the inaugural recipient of the Bernard S Goldman Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery. Dr. Fremes’ research interests have been primarily focused on clinical trials of myocardial protection, arterial conduits for coronary surgery, and more recently transcatheter aortic valve surgery. Dr. Fremes has authored more than 500 papers. Dr Fremes has been a member of CCS, STS, AHA/ACC/SCAI, ESC/EACTS and ASPEN guidelines committees. Dr Fremes has had a lengthy supervisory role - his current PhD research fellow is Dominique Vervoort whose thesis is focussed on socioeconomic disparities in the provision of thoracic aortic care in Canada . He is the nominated PI of the CIHR-funded active ROMA, ROMA:Women and STICH3C randomized studies.
