Senior Research Associate

St. Michael's Hospital
Currently a PhD researcher at Unity Health Toronto - St. Michael’s Hospital, Dr. Allan specializes in arrhythmia and resuscitation research with a focus on sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in the young. She has 14+ years of experience in both in-hospital and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and resuscitation research. She was recently seconded to the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario to help streamline their processes for referring families of SCD patients for cascade screening.
In 2018, Dr. Allan co-founded CARE (Cardiac Arrest Response and Education), a grass roots organization made up of survivors of SCA, families who have lost a loved one to SCA, scientists, cardiologists and 6 paramedic organizations. Together with Heart and Stroke and the Red Cross, CARE’s mission is to increase survival from SCA through various community-based initiatives, including raising awareness of SCA, mandating CPR and AED training for all kids and increasing accessibility to AEDs. CARE was instrumental in helping to get Bill 141 Defibrillator Registration and Public Access Act to pass in June 2020 and is now lobbying the Ministry of Education to mandate CPR and AED training for all kids in Ontario.
She is a member of several committees, including the Cardiac Arrhythmia Network of Canada (CANet) Research Management Committee and Chair of the CANet Training and Education Committee.
As part of her in-hospital cardiac arrest research, she uses simulation as an educational tool. With an interest in using different training modalities to achieve best practice for BLS and ACLS, Dr. Allan helped develop an innovative BLS training program for healthcare providers and evaluated the effect of mock arrests carried out on the wards to optimize the quality and timing of response to in-hospital emergencies.
