Batool Barodi is third-year medical student at Central Michigan University School of Medicine. She graduated from York University with Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences followed by Master’s degree in Global Affairs and Health Justice at the University of Toronto. Since her first year of medical school, she worked on research projects with the heart failure team at Toronto General Hospital under Dr. Carolina Alba and surgeon Dr. Vivek Rao supervision. She was awarded the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research scholarship and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) Cardiothoracic Summer internship due to her extensive work on heart research in Canada and US.
As an AATS scholar, she interned during the summer of 2023 at Cleveland Clinic Congenital Heart Surgery Department, where she worked on different clinical projects under Dr. Hani Najm’s supervision. She is presently studying surgical approaches to improve outcomes of mitral valve replacement and repair in patients with congenital heart diseases. Apart from research, Batool represented her school at the annual American Medical Association(AMA) in Washington D.C. as student delegate to discuss policies on issues within the scope of the AMA.
In her spare time, Batool uses social media platforms to document her journey of becoming heart surgeon, serving mentor for students who don’t have access to mentorship opportunities. She also takes the lead on a Medical Arabic pilot program at the University of Michigan where she teaches basic and advanced spoken Arabic language skills to over 600 healthcare personnel, including medical students, physicians, surgeons and anyone else interested in studying medicine through an Arabic lens to better prepare for global surgical career. As an aspiring academic cardiac surgeon, she hopes to offer compassionate and holistic care to patients presenting with complex cardiovascular diseases requiring surgical interventions, improving heart health in North America and around the world.
