describe causes of cardiogenic shock and how echocardiography can be used to identify the mechanism;
list the key echocardiographic images needed in the evaluation of the hypoxic critically ill patient;.
explain the indications for TEE in the setting of a cardiac arrest; and
describe how ultrasound imaging can change the management in patients with sepsis.
Workshop Description: The role of echocardiography in critically ill patients is expanding, both in multidisciplinary accessibility and applications. This workshop will include 4 case-based presentations that will explore the role of echocardiography the management of critically ill patients. Discussion will focus on the echocardiographic diagnosis of cardiogenic shock, the imaging approach to evaluation of unexplained hypoxia, the role of TEE post cardiac arrest and how ultrasound can help guide management in the septic patient. Talks will focus on a case-based approach, and will be 8 minutes long and will engage the audience with questions and include time for discussion. Speakers will include both critical care physicians and echocardiographers from across Canada. At the end there will be an additional 5 minutes to cover discussion and any follow up questions from the audience.
