Learning Objectives / Objectifs d'apprentissage:

At the end of this session participants will be able to / Au terme de cette conférence, vous serez:

review current practice and delivery of echocardiography across Canada;
review the key updates to the CCS/CSE training standards and maintenance of competence in echocardiography; and
discuss how these new standards will impact the current echo training paradigm and practice of echocardiography.

Workshop Description: Echocardiography is an imaging modality essential to the provision of contemporary cardiovascular care across diverse clinical settings. This workshop will present the results and implications of key CSE initiatives that address important facets of current echocardiography practice.

We will present an overview of the current practice of echocardiography across Canada, based on data from a recent CSE survey including hospital characteristics, case volumes, use of novel techniques and perceived challenges. We have identified substantial variations in practice patterns across Canadian hospitals and hope that our findings will inform future directions for regional systems of care.

With the paradigm shift in medical education to a competency-based framework, there is a need to look beyond training duration and case volumes as indicators of competency in echocardiography. A comprehensive approach is essential, with emphasis on the expected roles and responsibilities for a given level of competency; thorough review of case mix ensuring sufficient exposure to clinically significant pathology; and objective assessments of competence. We will present the new 2023 CCS/CSE Standards for Physician Training and Maintenance of Competence in Adult Echocardiography, followed by a discussion of the impact of these training standards on the training and practice of echocardiography.
