describe the roles of multidisciplinary team members required for optimal cardiopulmonary bypass function;
develop effective nontechnical skills (communication, teamwork) with multidisciplinary team members in the operative setting; and
safely initiate, maintain, and separate from cardiopulmonary bypass.

Workshop Description: Cardiopulmonary bypass is a vital component of the modern surgical approach to cardiac disease. While this technology has revolutionized the feasibility of available surgical repairs, it is critical that team members adopt a unified clinical approach given the potential for significant morbidity and mortality. As such, multidisciplinary team training using simulation may afford team members a better appreciation of the collaboration required for optimal circuit management of cardiopulmonary bypass without compromising patient safety.

During this workshop, participants will learn about and interact with a simulated cardiopulmonary bypass circuit. A review of the various circuit components will be provided along with the completion of one or more simulated scenarios. Emphasis will be placed on nontechnical skills, such as teamwork and communication, required to safely initiate, maintain, and separate from cardiopulmonary bypass. Critical roles will be highlighted including those of the anesthesiologist, perfusionist, operative nurse, and surgeon.

Simulations will be conducted using a high-fidelity platform incorporating a mannikin with authentic circuit elements. This will allow participants to adapt and/or modify the circuit with accurate reflection of physiologic parameters in real time. Additionally, a high-fidelity transesophageal echocardiogram simulator will be used to demonstrate surgical pathology.

This workshop is intended for physicians and non-physicians alike. Audience members will be recruited for participation in the simulated scenario(s). As per the usual practice in simulation training, a debriefing session will be held and participants will be given the opportunity to share feedback to all members of the multidisciplinary team.
