understand when and how to manually measure the QT interval rather than rely on the automated ECG machine derived QT interval;
investigate a patient with suspected Congenital Long QT Syndrome (LQTS);
know how to manage congenital and acquired LQTS; and
recognize medications that cause Acquired LQTS.

Workshop Description: "My patient fainted and has a long QT interval - what now?" These questions, plus others, will be addressed through case studies by select panel members of the 2023 Clinical Practice Update (CPU) on Management of the Patient with a Prolonged QT Interval.

A prolonged QT interval on the ECG is associated with an increased risk of the Torsades de Pointes form of ventricular arrhythmia resulting in syncope, sudden cardiac arrest or death, or misdiagnosis as a seizure disorder. This CPU provides practical tips about measurement of the QT interval, diagnosis, and management of both congenital long QT syndrome and acquired prolongation of the QT interval. Recommendations of medication and safe usages are incorporated within the discussion.
