Learning Objectives / Objectifs d'apprentissage:

At the end of this session participants will be able to / Au terme de cette conférence, vous serez:

identify some differences between men and women with respect to heart failure;
define some common causes of heart failure;
review management strategies used in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF);
understand how systemic inflammation, adds to CV Risk in women with autoimmune rheumatic disorders;
understand cardiometabolic risk factor burden and immune modulating medications may contribute to increased cardiovascular risk in women; and
understand how hypertension and Diabetes in pregnancy adds to intermediate and long term CV risk in women.

Workshop Description: Cardiovascular disease in women presents unique challenges. Risk factors may be different than men. Many women have limited or no cardiovascular risk assessment until well past their reproductive age. While both genders share common risk factors such as age, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, women may experience distinct risks factors and related to pregnancy, autoimmune diseases, and heart failure. For instance, women are more prone to develop diastolic heart failure. Furthermore, women are more likely to suffer from autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease due to chronic inflammation. Additionally, complications during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, can elevate a woman's risk of developing cardiovascular disease later in life. Recognizing and addressing these gender and sex-specific risk factors is essential in managing and preventing cardiovascular disease among women. In this workshop, the audience will learn key strategies for managing the women at risk through case-based patient scenarios.

Presentation 1- My joints hurt - what does that have to do with my heart?: Autoimmune rheumatic disorders (ARDs)—an emerging cardiovascular risk factor in women.
Autoimmune rheumatic disorders (ARDs) have emerged as significant cardiovascular risk factors in women. ARDs are a group of diseases characterized by immune system dysfunction, leading to chronic inflammation and damage to various tissues and organs, including the heart and blood vessels. Some common ARDs that pose cardiovascular risks for women include rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and systemic sclerosis (SSc). In this presentation, the association between ARDs and increased cardiovascular risk in women, and strategies to address the cardiovascular risk, will be discussed.

Presentation 2- Failing the pregnancy stress test: Cardiometabolic risk reduction after reproductive events
Several reproductive events (i.e., the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes, preterm birth, infertility, etc.) are independent female-specific risk factors for premature cardiometabolic diseases (i.e., hypertension, dysglycemia, ASCVD, heart failure, etc.). A novel Canadian Guideline on the best practices to prevent, screen and manage cardiometabolic risk factors after pregnancy will be presented, including supporting evidence and interdisciplinary clinical implementation strategies.

Presentation 3: Deciphering Dyspnea in Women: Contemporary Management of Women with Heart Failure

Sex and gender differences in heart failure can impact the prevalence, presentation, underlying causes, treatment response, and outcomes for men and women. Recognizing these differences is essential for providing tailored care and improving outcomes for patients. In this presentation, the approach to the contemporary management of women with heart failure will be discussed.
