Knowing how to proceed in advanced issues associated with dysphagia clinical practice is imperative. Few patients present with an isolated diagnosis and most have very complicated syndromic medical and behavioral histories. Consequently, there are numerous concepts that stretch beyond the basics of exercise- based approaches and swallow motor recovery principles. These are often frequently encountered in clinical practice, but not specifically dealt with in training or published papers within the field. This seminar will seek out new frontiers, and boldly go where others have not . Specifically, it will address common clinical issues using examples, interactive problem solving covering the topics below
• The role and applicability of cross education/ cross system muscle development e.g., respiratory or voice therapies to leverage swallow change • Avenues to assist your patient to develop improved “swallow form” • Abnormal behaviors –methods to overcome these. • Tools, tools, tools? – How to make judicious use of what’s out there • Measuring and managing fatigue to promote your patient’s practice • “Engage” – methods to advance adherence to swallow therapy
