Children with complex communication needs present unique and exciting opportunities for the pediatric speech-language pathologist. Designing intervention that engages the child, as well as facilitates participation can be very challenging. Often, SLPs must address a child’s communication limitations with limited resources while in a setting that is not optimally designed. In this short course, we will discuss the International Classification of Function for Children and Youth and the importance of focusing on participation as our goal for children with communication impairments Then, we will work through three case studies to design and create intervention materials that target engagement, communication and participation in a variety of functional settings. This short course will be a hands-on and interactive ‘make-n-take’ course. Participants will learn how to switch adapt a toy, use everyday items to create fun and novel activities, as well as how to create a multi-sensory literacy lesson to use in individual or group activities. At the end of the course, participants will have at least 3 activities to take home for immediate use with their clients.

At the end of this session, attendees will be able to relate the ICF-CY’s position on participation to strategies for engagement and communication with children with complex communication needs.
At the end of this session, attendees will be able to design an intervention activity to target communicative initiation for a child with sensorimotor deficits.
At the end of this session, attendees will be able to create an intervention plan and materials to address participation limitations for a child with severe neuromuscular impairments.
