Special Topic Forum: Responding to a Post-Roe World: Supporting MFM Practice and Patient Access

By early 2023, maternal-fetal medicine subspecialists and their patients will be months into a “post-Roe” world, with the availability of essential, accessible abortion care widely varied and dependent on the laws of the state in which one practices and lives. Established approaches to clinical training and to patient care, counseling, and referral are expected to be upended by severe restrictions in vast swaths of the country. This Special Session will assist MFMs in understanding and navigating this challenging landscape of inequitable access to abortion care and provide strategies for response to improve patient access to care and clinical training opportunities.

Learning Objectives:

Understand how the June 2022 Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has influenced state, federal, and judicial actions around abortion and impacted the provision of comprehensive reproductive health services within the practice of maternal-fetal medicine.
Identify barriers in providing indicated abortion care in your institution, state, and region, and explore strategies and techniques to overcome those barriers.
Familiarize yourself with effective strategies to build referral networks that can assist patients experiencing inequitable access to necessary care
