Learn how an organization cooperated with diverse partners — the Philadelphia Water Department, a friends group, a conservation organization, private landowners, and others — to install and maintain a wide variety of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) features. Projects included a historic park’s rain garden; street bump-outs; pond, stream channel, and swale improvements; a new bioretention facility; and restoration of an area adjacent to Tacony Creek.
The projects visited are in some of the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed communities affected by environmental injustice. Presenters will describe how projects were envisioned, developed, and funded; highlight maintenance challenges and tools; and outline strategies to ensure continued community engagement and investment that lead to inclusive, equitable work results.
Learning Objectives:
Identify challenges and strategies for implementing and maintaining green stormwater infrastructure projects in an urban environment.
Recognize practices to build community engagement in diverse communities.
Identify various GSI features and potential maintenance issues and solutions.
