Margaret Ikeda began teaching the Integrated Studios at CCA in 2007 and have taught studios at UC Berkeley and the University of Washington. She is a co-founder and current director of the Architectural Ecologies Lab at CCA, and one of the leads for the CCA’s Academic Alliance at the Autodesk Technology Center in San Francisco. One of the Lab's most recent project called the Float Lab, is currently moored in the Port of Oakland and designed to test a new type of resilient floating breakwater. The Float Lab works with biological fouling to attenuate waves and create ecological habitats. The project received a 2018 Architect Magazine R+D award, a national 2019 AIA Innovation Award, and was recently awarded the 2020 ACSA Faculty Design Award. It is the first digitally designed and fabricated floating prototype to be permitted by the Army Corp of Engineers for the San Francisco Bay. It continues to inspire possibilities for a floating future with its inclusion in multiple articles and 3 books this summer that envision how we adapt to climate change and rethink architecture’s relationship with nature.
