William A. Gilchrist is the Director of Planning and Building for the City of Oakland, CA. In his previous roles as Director of Place-Based Planning in New Orleans, LA and Director Planning, Engineering & Permits in Birmingham, AL, he oversaw the operations of city-departments including engineering, architecture, building and inspection services, public works, historic preservation, planning, and urban design. His work has been recognized by the Urban Land Institute, the American Institute of Architects, the National League of Cities, the American Planning Association, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
He is a Trustee of the Urban Land Institute and MIT. He chaired the American Institute of Architects Committee on Design Assistance. He is a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. In 2018, he was recognized with the MIT Architecture Alumni Civic Design Award at the 150th anniversary of MIT's architecture program as the first in the United States. He has served on advisory boards to Carnegie Mellon, Tulane University and Auburn Univerisity. He is an alumnus of MIT's Architecture Department and Sloan School of Management; and of Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.
