Panel Speaker
Malden River Works
Malden, Massachusetts
Marcia Manong calls herself a community activist and social justice warrior. She has been involved with several diverse communities in Massachusetts, Mississippi, and South Africa. She is a fierce supporter of equitable community engagement and welcomes the attention finally being given to environmental justice in communities of color.
Marcia’s latest engagement is with the Malden River Works (MRW) Project, an experimental resilience project bringing together a new coalition of community leaders of color, youth, environmental advocates, and government stakeholders. The work is being driven by the Malden River Works Steering Committee, of which she is the Chairperson. This project demonstrates a community-led planning and design process for the creation of a new flood-resilient public open space on Malden’s industrial riverfront. The project also seeks to serve as a model for the equitable and resilient transformation of similar urbanized waterways in metro Boston and beyond.
