Gretchen Hilyard Boyce is a regional expert and national leader in the field of preservation planning and cultural landscapes. She is the founder of Groundwork Planning & Preservation, a consulting firm that holistically evaluates historic places utilizing the cultural landscape approach. Gretchen is also a Senior Cultural Resources Specialist at MIG, where she develops historic resource documentation and leads cultural resources compliance for the National Park Service and local planning projects. With over 16 years of experience in the public and private sectors, Gretchen helps clients balance the values and views of multiple stakeholders while meeting complex regulatory requirements. Since 2006, Gretchen has guided her clients through some of California’s largest planning projects including: the redesign of the California State Capitol, California High Speed Rail, San Francisco’s Better Market Street, and India Basin Shoreline Park. Gretchen previously worked at the National Park Service, San Francisco Planning Department, and private consulting firms before starting her own practice in 2021. Through Groundwork Planning & Preservation, Gretchen applies her extensive experience and solutions-oriented approach to enable clients to navigate the often-challenging process to adapt historic resources while also protecting their value.
