Keith Russell is the Program Manager for Urban Conservation for Audubon Mid-Atlantic. Based in Philadelphia his work has involved education, monitoring, research, advocacy, and on the ground conservation to improve conditions for birds in ways that have also broadened engagement in the environmental movement. Areas of special focus include bird collisions with human structures, birds and nocturnal lights, native plants, and migration stopover habitat.
Keith became interested in birds as a child and his love of birds led him to earn a bachelor’s degree in biology from Cornell University and a masters in zoology from Clemson University. Prior to joining Audubon in 2003, he spent 21 years at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University where he worked in the exhibits department as collections manager and subsequently in the ornithology department where he was assistant editor for The Birds of North America, an encyclopedic publication that complied life history information for over 700 species of North American birds.
He has published many scientific papers and popular articles about birds and has received a number of awards including the 2016 American Birding Association’s Ludlow Griscom Award for outstanding contributions to regional ornithology.
