First- and Last-Mile Connections at All Scales

An expanding array of mobility services and technologies are available for people to access fixed-route public transit. They include well-established modes (walking, cycling, and assistive mobility devices) as well as emerging options like micromobility (e.g. shared and personal e-bikes and e-scooters), on-demand transit, ride-hailing, and autonomous shuttles. Communities have been challenged to plan, improve infrastructure, regulate, and create incentives in a way that unlocks the potential of these options to improve transit access, especially for disadvantaged groups who are more reliant on it.

Improving “first- and last-mile connections" can support community goals regarding transit ridership, traffic safety, social equity, emissions reductions, and public health. There are many potential routes to success, and they look different at regional, municipal, and neighborhood scales.

Learn real-world lessons from the MTA (New York City's regional transit agency); Jersey City, New Jersey; and Culver City, California. All three recently undertook plans and projects to improve first- and last-mile transit connections across a wide range of scales and tactics that include policy, equity analysis, and design and implementation of high-impact projects.
