Develop a greater understanding of African American history and culture. Presenters describe hardships overcome by people freed from slavery, efforts to allow enslaved people to reach freedom in the North, and efforts to abolish slavery in Pennsylvania and the United States. The tour links historical events and locations to current issues concerning equity.
Visit the President's House, where enslaved people lived with President Washington; Washington Square Park, which served as a burial ground; the site of the first African Episcopal Church, founded by Pastor Richard Allen after he earned freedom; stops on the Underground Railroad; Congress Hall, where Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act in 1783; and other important sites.
