A livable community is a place where people of all ages and backgrounds feel welcomed and have a sense of belonging. Community members should have access to housing that meets their needs and a range of transportation options that gets them to their desired destinations. They should also be able to find a variety of amenities and services: healthy food, health care and places to socialize and interact with friends and neighbors, and places to enjoy the outdoors or exercise. With these features and more in place, people stay active and engaged in their communities at every life stage.
Using millions of data points from 50 national data sources, the AARP Livability Index scores nearly every neighborhood and community in the U.S. for services and amenities that affect people’s lives the most. This free web-based tool provides the clearest picture yet of how well a community meets the current and future needs of people of all ages.
See a live demonstration of the Index and learn how planners, community leaders, and local elected officials can use the Index to investigate a locality’s current attributes and support actionable steps to improve their own communities.
