According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2022 there were more than 1.8 million retail, food, and service establishments in the United States. The National Retail Federation reports that 98 percent were small businesses employing fewer than 50 people. Data are not readily available about the total number of minority-owned businesses and minority-serving districts across the nation.
This presentation reviews a free, interactive, anti-displacement dashboard for community organizations seeking to understand local commercial displacement risks and investment opportunities. Panelists discuss datasets and provide on-the-ground examples of anti-displacement strategies on Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles and in Chicago. Destination Crenshaw aims to ensure long-deserved economic investment and strategic urban planning in a thriving commercial corridor. Chicago’s Purple Line Corridor Coalition has deployed strategic, social-media marketing and events to preserve small businesses. Results include 1.5 million impressions, 40,000 engagements, and 330 percent audience growth for four commercial districts affected by the construction.
