Systemic racial discrimination has haunted the American housing market for generations. Environmental justice issues plague many neighborhoods today. Studying the history of these issues as they played out in one of America's iconic post-war suburbs reveals both the continuing effects of 20th-century actions and decisions and the challenges that planners face today.
Understanding the deep and systemic racial prejudice that has affected American suburbs— and realizing that this “history" is not that old — equips current practitioners with knowledge of these past acts and enhances their sensitivity to the issues.
