Participants consider two case studies. One demonstrates how threatened development of a National Register site was averted, using public funds and a private foundation grant. The other relates how a 50-acre site with a historic mansion and gardens was transferred from state ownership to a historical society, with preservation funding provided by a conservation easement purchased by the host township.
Both cases demonstrate complex arrangements requiring foresight and imagination. One of the sites will become available to the public to emphasize its historic significance and teach important lessons about the abolitionist movement and the importance of events in this geographic area. The other, once threatened with closure, will remain open to everyone.
This workshop includes walking on some uneven terrain; venues are not ADA-accessible.
