Many cities face challenges to new street layouts, including resistance to change, auto-oriented metrics of success, insufficient funding, parking and loading issues, and land use conflicts. Philadelphia project managers addressed each of these issues in projects — some of which took years — that included painted bikeways, parking-separated bike lanes, and entire complete-streets projects, all intended to improve the safety of all roadway users on key City Center corridors.
This presentation reveals unique, community-led responses to many of the typical arguments against separated bikeways. Project managers share how they coordinated with more than the typical stakeholders — including building tenants, students, and roadway users — to move projects forward through political and timing challenges.
Learning Objectives:
Compare the comfort levels and connectivity of Center City bikeways.
Describe challenges and solutions from each bikeway’s unique perspective.
Provide insight and mentorship, with examples, to other professionals.
