Explore the planning, programming, and design of an innovative, LEED Silver-certified facility that combines a health center, primary care practice, branch library, and recreation center with playground and park. The facility offers an unprecedented mix of health, education, and recreation programs to the socially, ethnically, and economically diverse Newbold and Point Breeze communities. Both are impoverished, rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods underserved by existing family health-care options.
The project aimed to improve community educational, recreational, and health services through quality of design and individual and joint programming that leverages co-location. The design reflects the "Ten Principles for Building Healthy Places" established by the Urban Land Institute to align design with physical and mental health.
The community participated in creating the facility, which transformed a blighted city complex into a center for community engagement and civic pride. Process was key and entailed regular meetings with neighborhood organizations, from conceptualization through design and completion. Their input influenced many design aspects and resulted in a facility that the community has embraced enthusiastically.
Throughout the neighborhood and city, the center is advancing a new model for public-private partnerships that facilitate access to health care, education, and recreation for Philadelphia’s impoverished, immigrant, and underserved communities.
