Migraine disproportionately affects women three times more than men, with 18% of women and 6% of men affected by this disabling condition. Migraine is influenced by several factors, including fluctuating hormones through the life of women. These hormonal influences have impact at menarche, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause. For the past few years, there have been updates on the effect of hormones in migraine. It is time to focus on this topic as the management of women with migraine is challenging with peak incidence during their reproductive years. Migraine is considered one of the most disabling conditions globally and an invisible epidemic especially in women with migraine.
This course will provide an understanding on the role of hormones in migraine, evolution of migraine in women, as well as an updated practical approach to evaluation management of migraine in women. This course is a case-based presentation of a female with migraine with and without aura from adolescence, following the evolution of her migraine throughout the different stages of her life from menarche, to pregnancy, and menopause. Issues of discussion will include stroke risk in migraine with aura, OCP use, and recent data and guidelines on management of migraine during pregnancy, lactation, and menopause.
