This course will cover basic concepts of oral prescribing, such as pregnancy/lactation categories and prescribing for children. Commonly used oral antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, glaucoma, and pain management medications will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Upon conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
Describe important prescribing concepts such as pregnancy/lactation considerations and pediatric dosing
Acquire the skills to appropriately oral antiviral therapy in herpes simplex and herpes zoster ocular infections
Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of drug selection in prescribing oral antibacterial agents in eye care
Describe important concepts in pain management including best practices for opioid prescribing in the eye care setting
Acquire knowledge to approach pain management in eyecare with a stepped approach depending on location, cause, and severity of the pain
Demonstrate an understanding of the role of oral corticosteroid therapy in eyecare, including its potential adverse effects and contraindications
