The base curve is perhaps the most incompletely understood aspect of everyday ophthalmic optics. Learning to choose the proper base curve is one of the most common battles in the ongoing war between optics and cosmetics. Understanding exactly how, why, where, and when base curve choice will significantly impact the balance between cosmetics, perception and peripheral acuity is more than essential: it elevates designing a pair of glasses to an art form.
Learning Objectives:
Upon conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:
Investigate the historical timeline of ophthalmic lens design and the different design approaches used in prioritizing wide, sharp fields of view
Explore the evolution of the eye, human peripheral vision and how use proper lens design and best practices during lens choice and fitting
Discover the daily challenge opticians face as they try to achieve a peaceful balance in the war between optics and cosmetics occurring within every pair of eyewear
