Space missions targeting lunar or other deep-space bodies are moving the boundaries of space exploration and research, pushing traditional space power system designs to their limits in power density and efficiency. This work presents a 200W, 1MHz switching frequency, Cascaded Buck-LLC resonant converter that is oriented for radiation hardened (rad-hard) space applications and achieves high efficiency by taking advantage of Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices. The converter achieves a peak efficiency of 91%, a 10% improvement over other currently available converters in its power and voltage range while maintaining a 100krad, 75MeV-cm2/mg radiation hardness.
