This case study explores the benefits of using planar transformer design software for different power ranges of USB PD power supply. The presentation includes design considerations and actual implementation for three power supplies using PI Expert™; planar magnetics construction information from Magnetics Design Tool, including copper layer tracks and internal insulation layers; safety creepage and clearance considerations and practical safety compliance implementation; comparison of the merits and disadvantages of a planar magnetics design in a USB PD power supply; performance aspects including power density, profile, leakage reactance, thermal performance, and consistency of electrical performance are compared.
