This work introduces a modified perturb and observe (P&O) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm and a frequency adaptive-reduced order generalized integrator (FA-ROGI) based sensorless technique for the development of solar photovoltaic (PV) powered encoder-less electric vehicle (EV). The modified P&O algorithm optimizes the PV power, while taking care of the battery energy storage (BES) charging current, thereby enhancing the battery life. The FA-ROGI based effective estimation of EV speed and angular position results in encoder-less operation and smooth speed regulation using field-oriented control (FOC) technique even at lower speeds. Performance of the presented EV system comprising of PV array, BES, DC-DC converter, permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and voltage source inverter (VSI) is examined through simulation and laboratory experimental validation.
