Two major onboard chargers (OBC) challenges are high power density and fast charging. This presentation proposes an 11kW/800V onboard charger based on the flying capacitor and neutral point clamp multilevel converter topology. Utilizing 650V GaNs with Higher dV/dt, better switching performance, and lower thermal resistance (lower than 2C/W) in 800V applications enable higher switching frequency and higher efficiency resulting in high power density. An 11kW/800V onboard charger has been implemented with 650V GaN devices, and the results will be presented in this presentation. The experimental results show that the proposed converter can reach higher power density and efficiency.
