In this paper, a positively coupled inductor is proposed to shrink the switching frequency range for a CRM buck converter with wide input and output voltage range by taking advantage of the non-linear inductance. Furthermore, a high efficiency PCB winding-based planar inductor is proposed. The PCB inductor winding loss is reduced by interleaving windings from different phases. The planar inductor core loss is reduced by a proposed double-PQ core structure which has less flux crowding compared with the conventional EI shape core. A 1.8 kW buck converter that realizes 99% peak efficiency is presented as an example.
