The series connection of 10 kV SiC MOSFETs has the potential to implement power converters with dc-link voltage up to 30 kV or higher. A medium voltage power converter enabled by series-connection of 10 kV SiC MOSFETs and JBS Diodes as a solution for enabling Asynchronous Microgrid Power Conditioning System (AMPCS) is proposed. The voltage balancing of these series-connected devices is achieved by using RC-snubbers. This digest addresses the different conduction modes and switching sequences in a Three-Level Neutral Point Clamped (3L-NPC) pole which is used as building block for the three-phase converter. The switching loss analysis for the inner and outer MOSFETs and clamping diodes is presented in this digest. The amount of switching losses that are disspated through the device (and heatsink) and through the snubber resistor is calculated from the experimental results.
