Electromechanical relays (EMR) are widely used in control systems. However, switching DC and AC loads can lead to wear-out of EMR contacts and limited lifetime of such re-lays. This paper discusses, if solid-state relays (SSR) can be an alternative to EMRs in control systems with respect to isolation, electrical and thermal aspects.
