Advancing Lifelong Certification Programs for ABMS Member Boards

Session Description:

The mission of the American Board of Medical Specialties is to serve the public and the medical profession by improving the quality of health care through setting professional standards for lifelong certification in partnership with Member Boards. ABMS Board Certification establishes the highest standards of patient care and promote continuous learning and assessment across the ABMS Boards Community.

This session will focus on the substantive advances made to the continuing certification programs (MOC) across the Boards’ Community. Faculty will provide overview of the 7 Member Boards’ certification programs participating in the ABMS CertLink longitudinal assessment platform, including a focused update from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG). The American Board of Emergency Medicines (ABEM) will also present the MyEMCert assessment process that is designed to meet the needs of practicing Emergency Medicine physicians. 

The CertLink overview will focus on frequent practice-relevant assessments with spaced repetition to support learning and competence for both core specialty knowledge and emerging advances across each participating specialty that inform summative certification decisions.

The ABEM MyEMCert program focuses on two core components of the Emergency Medicine certification program:

• MyEMCert modules are topic-specific assessments that promote learning and knowledge reinforcement. The major content of emergency medicine is divided across 8 content areas, and


• Key Advances accelerate knowledge translation by providing efficient synopses and videos on new developments in the specialty of emergency medicine.  

Innovation: This session demonstrates ABMS Member Boards' Commitment to innovative design, learning methodology and advancements in technology platforms that meet the needs of contemporary practicing physicians. Member Boards optimizing the CertLink Platform  supports longitudinal assessment methodology, immediate feedback strategies and access to educational resources to remediate knowledge gaps through a robust online platform. The MyEMCert  platform optimizes access to focused and flexible modules that assesses physicians knowledge, judgement and skills that are relevant to practicing physicians.
