This presentation examines the effects of various factors on the microbiological water quality and biofilm formation in buildings. The state of available guidance for maintaining water quality in buildings is reviewed and found to be inconsistent. The role of disinfectant is considered in detail. Experimental results are reviewed which show that smaller pipes are associated with greater nitrification and the loss of residual disinfectant. Results from surveys of experts and of current practitioners suggest a potential role for enhanced monitoring of building water systems. Finally, some thoughts on next steps for improving water quality in buildings are offered.
