This presentation provides a review of the timeline of the catastrophe and issues surrounding the collapse of the Champlain Tower in Surfside, Florida based on what is currently known. The legal proceedings were historic in nature and provided lessons for how major litigation involving many disparate parties and insurers can resolve coverage questions much quicker than comparative litigation. This presentation also provides a review of the legislation developed in its wake. In particular, this presentation provides an overview of the various building safety assessment programs in place throughout Florida along with a review of Florida’s new SB-4D and its requirements from a design professional and a legal perspective. This presentation concludes with an update on the Florida Building Commission’s recommendations regarding how SB-4D is to be implemented and the impact all of this will have on future claims.
