Dr Michaud has developed pacing maneuvers that allow easy diagnosis of arrhythmias in the setting of catheter ablation for supraventricular tachycardia and broadened this approach to assist ablation operators in more complex arrhythmia cases related to atrial fibrillation and flutter. He is credited with at least 4 separate pacing maneuvers that are now part of core testing during specialty Board examinations for cardiac electrophysiology. As the Director of the Center for the Advanced Management of Atrial Fibrillation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, he played a pivotal role in developing better ablation strategies for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. These include methods for assessing and improving the quality of radiofrequency ablation lesions, the result of which improves procedure success by making pulmonary vein isolation more durable. Recently published strategies to optimize lesion delivery by varying the amount of coolant delivered through the tip of the ablation catheter, which may limit damage to structures adjacent to the left atrium. As a Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center he helped to build a prominent Cardiac Electrophysiology Section and was the clinical PI in an AHA SFRN grant studying the effects on 2-HOBA ealry after catheter ablation. Now at Massachesetts General Hospital in Boston, he is building a complex ablation program
