Dr. Jessica Schmidt, MD, MPH serves as the director of global health at the University of Wisconsin Department of Emergency Medicine as well as the global health fellowship director. She is a former Fulbright scholar and graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. While in Baltimore, she completed a Master’s in Public Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she focused on epidemiology and biostatistics. Dr. Schmidt completed her emergency medicine residency training at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. She then chose to focus on ultrasound and global health by completing an ultrasound fellowship at Denver Health Medical Center. Dr. Schmidt is currently partnering with physicians at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital and the Mbale Clinical Research Institute, along with Atlas International, an NGO dedicated to improving health for children in Eastern Africa. The project is focused on creating a training and research program in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in Mbale. In 2021, Dr. Schmidt helped to develop and implement a web-based toolkit to provide education and resources for point-of-care ultrasound in low-resource settings (Global Point of Care Ultrasound: A Technical Guide). She serves as a co-director for the Guatemala Medical Student Service Learning Trip to San Lucas Toliman where she supervises students in clincal care and research. Dr. Schmidt’s academic interests include emergency ultrasound, international medicine and resident education.
