Session Description: Note to selection committee: I know many meeting and event planners are always looking for highly interactive audience-involved programs for their events. This program is all about participation, as I show attendees how to use a technique called Mind Maps for better brainstorming success. This is a tool I’ve been using for about 30 years and has actually been a small (but very well enjoyed) part of my Managing & Leading Great Staff & Team Meetings program. I realized the audience has so much fun and involvement with this that I should turn it into its own standalone session, providing you with an option for a super-interactive and fun program for your event attendees.
Here is the description:
Mind Maps are a specific kind of interactive brainstorming tool that both enhances idea generation and easily encourages team involvement and participation. In this session, we’ll discuss how to set up an interactive mind map brainstorm session, key “to dos” for prepping and holding the brainstorm (as well as key “watchouts”), and then we’ll do one or more active, audience participatory mind map exercises, depending on time. We will also discuss how to take the output from the brainstorm and turn it into tangible plans/next steps following the session. The seminar leader, Randy Dean, MBA: The E-mail Sanity Expert®, will also share tips for those that will lead these sessions for their own teams and companies to help guarantee a successful brainstorming experience.
Key learning points: • What Mind Maps are and why they work so well to facilitate idea generation and involvement • How to set up a Mind Map session, including possible advance work and room prep • How to facilitate a live brainstorm session (yes, we’ll do at least one!) with tips for better involvement from participants as well as critical watchouts • Special tips on how to make the session more creative and fun, including use of pictures and art • How to take the output from the session and turn it into a plan or outline for next steps on whatever the topic of the brainstorm is
This is one of my favorite idea generation/content development/initial planning tools. I believe it can greatly speed up the planning process, reduce possible mistakes, and find unexpected ideas and options for workgroups and teams. Plus, they are just a lot of fun to do! This is a session that will get that critical participation from your event attendees.
Learning Objectives:
Learn how to prepare for and properly set up a brainstorming session (including materials), properly using the "mind map" technique
Run and manage a brainstorm session with tips on facilitating the session successfully, with either yourself or a co-worker managing
Take the best ideas from session and turn them into outlines and plans for action for your group or team
