Michael Monterey MD is a PGY-7 neurosurgery resident at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physiology. While at Michigan State, he was a 4-year letter winner as a member of the Baseball team. He served as team captain in his senior season. He then went on to complete a Master’s in Medical Sciences at Wayne State University School of Medicine. During his Masters, his research was focused on neuro-oncology and his thesis discussed the role of IDH in gliomas. He completed his medical degree at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, where he graduated with AOA distinction.
During his residency at UT, he has developed a special interest in spine. He dedicated his research year to studying the role of long non-coding RNA in reactive astrogliosis after spinal cord injury. Currently, he is an enfolded spine fellow focusing on deformity/scoliosis under the direction of John Quinn MD. After residency, he will continue his training at the University of Miami as a complex spine and peripheral nerve fellow under Michael Wang MD. After fellowship, he plans to pursue a career in academic medicine. He has a special interest in trauma, spine deformity and spine/peripheral nerve tumors. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons and traveling. He is also an avid Michigan State and Detroit sports fan.
