Assistant Professor
University of California, San Francisco
Oakland, California
My name is Liesl Close, MD, and I am a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at University of California San Francisco. I was born and raised in Oregon, attending Willamette University, and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology, with a minor in Psychology. I moved to Portland, Oregon to work in a neuroscience lab at the Oregon National Primate Research Center associated with Oregon Health & Science University. I then got a job in a lab in the department of neurological surgery at OHSU, where I studied brainstem mechanisms of pain modulation. During my time as a research assistant, I also trained as an EMT, exploring different fields of health care. After several years, I decided to pursue a career in medicine. I attended OHSU for medical school, intent on a surgical career. I completed my intern year in general surgery at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. I then moved to Iowa City, Iowa to fill a pre-residency fellow position in the neurosurgery department at the University of Iowa. I quickly matched to a formal residency position at Iowa, and in my time there I developed my interests in neuro trauma and spine surgery. In my final year of residency, I completed an enfolded complex spine surgery fellowship at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. After graduating from residency, I completed a neurotrauma and critical care fellowship at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. I joined the department of neurological surgery at UCSF and work primarily at Highland Hospital in Oakland, California, the only Level 1 Trauma hospital in the entire East Bay area. My primary clinical and research interests are acute brain and spine injury.
