Resident
UAB Neurosurgery
Birmingham, AL, US
My name is Nicholas M. B. Laskay, MD, and I am a resident physician in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Over the last four years of my neurosurgical residency, I have developed a strong passion for spinal and spinal cord pathology with an interest in clinical research and education. This has been in large part due to the unique opportunities and rapidly evolving field of spinal research, particularly when it comes to the use of new technology in spine surgery. As my passion for spine surgery has coalesced, I have developed a very strong interest in the regional community of Alabama and the patient population that we serve at UAB.
I have a strong interest in education and have been involved in several clinical research studies to that In college, I worked in a organic chemistry lab at the University of Alabama, developing novel organometallics for industry. As a medical student, I began studying neural tube defects of the spine in pediatrics. I learned the fundamentals of statistical analysis and importance of critical appraisal during this time. This endeavor is where I really began to fall in love with neurosurgery and clinical research. Early on in residency, I successfully completed several other clinical research projects involving arteriovenous malformations, deep brain stimulation, pediatrics, and most recently spine. I have a strong interest in how new technology, particularly how artificial intelligence can influence clinical outcomes in spine surgery. I have also become interested in resident education, particularly simulated learning using virtual and augmented reality. I am planning to do an adult spinal deformity fellowship after residency to further my knowledge on surgical indications, planning, and technical execution.
